[woman] How was your weekend?
[man] It was OK. I went to Miami.
[woman] Cool. Do you have family there? (Legal. Você tem família lá?)
[man] No. Just a couple of friends, but I didn’t see them.
[woman] Really? What did you do in Miami?
[man] I worked the whole weekend.
I only went out Saturday night, with my boss and a couple of coworkers.
[woman] Oh. Where did you guys go?
[man] We had dinner at a French restaurant.
[woman] How was the food?
[man] It was awesome, really good.
Good thing my boss paid for it. It was really expensive.
[woman] How was the weather? Miami is usually sunny.
[man] Oh, the weather was beautiful. It was hot outside, but we were in the conference room the whole time.

15. Chatting: You look bummed (02:13)

[woman] Hey, how’s it going?
[man] Fine… How are you?
[woman] I’m good, but you look kinda bummed. What’s up?
[man] Umm… I had my final exam last week, and it didn’t go so well.
[woman] Oh. But, you studied for a month, you were so prepared! What happened?
[man] Well, the exam started at 8, right? So I woke up at 7:40…
[woman] What? Oh, no…
[man] Yeah. I didn’t eat anything, so I was hungry the whole time, and really tired, so… you can imagine.
[woman] OK. Let’s have some coffee and talk about something funny.

16. Chatting: You look happy! Old job, new job (04:14)

[man] Hey, you look happy. What’s going on?
[woman] I have a new job – I’m starting next week!
[man] That’s awesome, congratulations! So what’s the new job?
[woman] I’m gonna be a sales manager at Acme.
[man] Acme! Wow, that’s a great company.
[woman] Yeah, and I wasn’t very happy in my old job, so…
[man] Really? I thought you liked it. (Sério? Eu achei que você gostava (dele).
[woman] Well, I liked the people. My coworkers were great. But the pay was awful.
[man] Well, congratulations!

17. Arriving somewhere, asking about hotels (05:58)

Pedindo informação na rua.

[man] Excuse me, are there any hotels in this neighborhood?
[woman] Sure. There’s the Grand Hotel just around the corner, on Lexington. (Claro. Just go one block and turn left.
[man] Uh… I think the Grand Hotel is too expensive. Are there any cheap hotels around here?
[woman] Cheap hotels? Well, this is an expensive neighborhood…. Oh, wait…. there’s a hostel on Lake. Hostels are cheap, so… (Albergues são baratos, então…)
[man] A hostel would be great! Um albergue seria ótimo! How do I get there?
[woman] Well, you can walk about twelve blocks, or you can take the bus.
[man] I think I’m gonna take the bus. Is there a bus stop around here?
[woman] Just go one block and turn right on Lexington.
[man] Thank you.
[woman] No problem.

18. Asking for directions (08:21)

[man] Excuse me, can you help me?
[woman] Sure.
[man] How do I get to the Griffin-Coleman House?
[woman] Let’s see.. the Griffin-Coleman House is on Nicholson and we’re on Nassau… OK. Just walk along Nassau and turn left on Duke of Gloucester Street.
[man] OK, so I just go on Nassau… how many blocks?
[woman] Just one block.
[man] One block. Then I turn left on Duke of… Say that again…? Fala (isso) de novo…?
[woman] Duke of Gloucester Street.
[man] Duke of “Gloster”.
Is that g-l-o-s-t-e-r? É g-l-o-s-t-e-r?
[woman] Nope, it’s g-l-o-u-c-e-s-t-e-r.
[man] Ah. Thanks. So I turn left on Duke of Gloucester and then…?
[woman] Then walk along Duke of Gloucester for two or three blocks… I’m not sure. (Não tenho certeza.
Just walk until Queen Street, and then turn left again.)
[man] OK. Duke of Gloucester for two or three blocks until Queen Street, then turn left.
[woman] Then, go another block on Queen until Nicholson Street, and you’re there.
[man] Duke of Gloucester for two or three blocks, turn left on Queen Street, go one block until Nicholson. [woman] That’s it.
[man] Thanks!
[woman] No problem.

[woman] Would you like to order?
[man] Yes, sure.
[woman] What would you like, sir?
[man] A cheeseburger… and a glass of milk.
[woman] OK, a cheeseburger… and a glass of milk. Is that all?
[man] I’d also like a small salad.
[woman] Which salad would you like, sir? We have Caesar’s and the House salad.
[man] I’m gonna have the Caesar’s.
[woman] So one cheeseburger, a glass of milk and one Caesar’s salad… Your total is twelve fifty.
[man] 12.50… Here.
[woman] Fifteen dollars… Here’s your change, two dollars fifty.
[man] Thank you.
