I was taught the expression “to be told” means the same as to “be warned” which I think emphasizes more the sentence than the passive form of “someone told me to”. Do you agree?

I could say “Told me to wait outside” or “Taught us French at a very early age”? ie, in the active voice, but with an indeterminate subject?
