Everyone – loved reading your comments. Keep listening!!
Hello Ana!
I really enjoy all your podcasts, and this one is specifically interesting, as it is about an English expression really difficult for us Brazilians to understand without an explanation like your. Thanks a bunch!!!
About these expressions, ONE TOO MANY, TWO TOO MANY and so on, I recently came across a “similar expression” when reading a report over the internet, about astronomy.
This is the sentence where such expression is:
“more than 20 per cent TOO MANY of the long-period comets observed since 1898 arrive from..”
Ana, could you explain this specific use of this expression “TOO MANY”, please? And/or just translate the sentence above, in such a way that it becomes understandable for this Brazilian here?
Thank you very much for your help!
Hi Lian.. you’re welcome;) Happy to know it helps.
Please post the entire sentence here and I’ll take a crack at it!
Hi, Ana Luiza! The sentence talks about the possibility of the discovery of a giant new planet, which are being named “Tyche”. Please see below the complete sentence with the expression “TOO MANY”:

In case you’d like to see the article it was taken from, this is the webpage:
http://www.independent.co.uk/news/science/up-telescope-search-begins-for-giant-new-planet-2213119.html
I’d like to understand the meaning of this expression in such sentence, and I would appreciate your help!
Oops… I don’t know what happens… the sentence above didn’t appear…!
Here it is again:
Professors Matese and Whitmire first proposed the existence of Tyche to explain why many of these long-period comets were coming from the wrong direction. In their latest paper, published in the February issue of Icarus, the international journal of solar system studies, they report that more than 20 per cent TOO MANYof the long-period comets observed since 1898 arrive from a band circling the sky at a higher angle than predicted by the galactic-tide theory.
Lian – I honestly cannot say that I know what “too many’ means in that case…
