Dogs watching TVHi, everybody!

Dog watching tv. Vendo essa expressão o que te vem à cabeça? Afinal, traduzindo literalmente, temos “cachorro assistindo tv “ . Você pensou naquela máquina de frango assado? Pois é! Certa vez uma aluna não só pensou isso, como disse que essa expressão teria esse significado. Mas
na verdade, ela quis dizer outra coisa.

Mas o que significa então a expressão dogs watching TV? Como sempre, exemplos. Bora lá:

This is my first time in New York, so I feel like a dog watching tv. Essa é a primeira vez em Nova Iorque , então me sinto meio por fora, um expectador, não entendo muito bem tudo que vejo.

Suddenly, I found myself in the middle of a big mess. I admit I had no idea what was going on. I felt like a dog watching tv. De repente, eu me vi no meio de uma tremenda confusão. Eu confesso que não estava entendendo o que estava acontecendo. Eu me senti perdida, um cão sem dono (via tudo, mas não entendia nada).

We must not be like dogs watching tv before such a huge tragedy caused by this week’s rainstorm in Rio de Janeiro. Nós não devemos ficar apáticos (ou seja, assistir como se não estivesse entendo o que está acontecendo, indiferentes) diante de uma imensa tragédia provocada pelas chuvas dessa semana no Rio de Janeiro.

Some students come to class early in the morning and act like dogs watching tv. Alguns alunos vêm pra aula de manhã cedinho e agem como se fossem cachorros assistindo tv (ficam brisando, olhando o professor e fora de órbita, não sabem pra que lado está ventando).

Deu para pegar o sentido da expressão? Ela tem a ver com uma atitude de alguém que assiste ou visualiza algo sem saber o que é, pra que serve, que assiste a uma situação sem entender o que está acontecendo… exatamente como cachorros fazem quando ficam em frente a uma tv assistindo algum programa: eles enxergam tudo, mas não tem discernimento de nada.

Rogerio – I can relate! But in my case, it’s not physicians… When I hang around some of my tech friends and they start talking about programming or about sci-fi… I feel like a dog watching TV.

Being a physician runs in my ex-girlfriend’s family. So, when her relatives got together for lunch they only talked about medicine stuff. Of course, I as a technical computing felt like dogs watching TV.

Many years ago, my kids had a dream; to know avenue 25 de Março and I went with them to show how were the things. Suddenly, a lot of people desesperate to run of the street because of the famous “arrastão”. My kids and I, for instants, felt like dogs watching tv, because I never had see anything like it.

Me and some friends went to a party and during the party… (I was dancing and singing out loud… everybody was having fun).. so I turned around and felt like a dog watching tv… some party crashers fighting and chairs flying everywhere.

Oh my God! It was crazy!!
